The 2014 Oscar nominees were revealed earlier today and we’re super excited for the African actors that were nominated. Newcomers Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) and Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) got nods for Best Actress/Actor in a Supporting Role for their debut performances while British/Nigerian actor Chiwetel Ejiofor also received a nom for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave.
In Captain Philips, first time actor Barkhad Abdi plays a Somali pirate alongside legendary actor Tom Hanks.

12 Years a Slave was was the second most nominated movie this year after American Hustle and Gravity. The Alexandra McQueen directed movie got nine nods including Best Picture, Directing, Costume Design and Best Film Editing.
And Captain Philips was nominated in the Best Picture, Sound Mixing, Film Editing, Sound Editing and Best Writing – adapted screenplay categories.
